Dr.Anti-Cancer
Roberto García

The main concern of cancer patients is the change in their quality of life during and after the disease.

While it is true that cancer is a disease that represents a challenge for all patients, bringing with it symptoms of fatigue, pain and tiredness, it is also true that doctors try to recover the quality of life of each one.

Despite the treatments, the goal of doctors is to improve the quality of life for cancer patients rather than limit themselves.

What are the recommendations to improve the quality of life of cancer patients?

Reduce stress:

This is the main recommendation, because stress is a real silent enemy.
Stress can cause complications with other pathologies and even affect the treatment against the tumor.
For this reason, patients are advised to reduce their stress levels.

We know that it is not something simple, stress appears in the face of the uncertainty of the disease itself, in the attitude of family members and even in the discomfort caused by the treatments.
Even so, the patient must commit to himself to understand that stress is not going to take him anywhere else, but on the contrary.

That said, there are many techniques that patients can implement to reduce or eliminate stress.

These are some recommendations, in the same way each human being has their own way of relaxing, the idea is to find it and apply it as much as possible

Be physically active

As is well known, exercise is part of a healthy life.

Exercise can improve the quality of life of the cancer patient in many ways, improving self-esteem, triggering hormone levels that open the way to optimism, stimulating muscle strength, strengthening heart health.

With exercise, a healthy weight can be ensured that avoids other diseases such as hypertension or diabetes.
Although the patient may not be in the mood to exercise, it is recommended that a routine be done two or three times a week.

Heavy training is not necessary for these cases, walking, dancing, even a little yoga can be enough to get all the benefits of physical activity.
There are experts who claim that with fifteen (15) minutes of physical activity a day you can increase the quality of life and strengthen the body.

The important thing is to create the patient’s routine and conformity with this physical activity.

Healthy eating:

Create a diet focused on improving health.

As is well known, food plays a fundamental role in the development of diseases and in their improvement as well.

Through food, the patient’s body can worsen or improve, so it is necessary to be very attentive to the foods offered to the cancer patient.

The recommendation of professionals is to avoid processed foods, fats and red meat, all of which represent a risk to the patient.
Generally, the medical oncologist establishes an explicit diet for each patient, according to what he considers best for each case, in the same way these three foods mentioned above are always eradicated.

The inclusion of fruits and vegetables in the diet is the key to optimizing the patient’s life, with a good diet the implicit discomforts of the disease can be reduced and thus improve the quality of life.

It is important to clarify that a diet of fruits, vegetables, vegetables and lean proteins does not have to be boring, part of increasing the quality of life is that the patient enjoys every moment of their life and their food.

Support network for difficult feelings:

It is important to find someone to drain complex emotions with.
When the patient is faced with the news, the physical changes due to the treatment, the uncertainty, anxiety and depression that cancer leaves behind, it is necessary to build a support network, either of friends, family and even mental health professionals who help them.

All these feelings are rooted in each patient’s own perception of the disease, for some it can be more stressful than for others, the same happens with the pain threshold.
However, in each case it is essential to find someone to talk to about complex emotions such as depression, anger, anxiety that cause stress and increase the symptoms of the disease such as insomnia.

What is recommended is that communication be maintained with a mental health specialist who will help each patient in their personal case, who will give them a better perception of their current situation.
Above all, it provides tools to improve their mood in the face of adversity and helps to deal with important issues of the disease such as self-image, sexuality and family relationships.

Do what is considered necessary to improve the quality of life:

Each patient lives their process in their own way, however there are obvious considerations that must be emphasized such as:

These are all parameters that each patient with the support of their family and friends must decide to apply or not.
These are all the recommendations that as a professional oncologist can be made in order to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and make their process with the disease more bearable.
