What is Glioblastoma multiforme?

Glioblastoma multiforme is a type of high-grade cancerous brain tumor. It originates from glial cells, which are non-neuronal cells that provide support and protection to neurons in the central and peripheral nervous system. Glioblastoma multiforme is an aggressively growing tumor that infiltrates surrounding healthy brain tissue.

Causes of Glioblastoma multiforme

The exact causes of glioblastoma multiforme are not known. However, it has been observed to occur more frequently in people with certain inherited genetic conditions.

Additionally, exposure to ionizing radiation such as radiation therapy used in cancer treatment has been associated with an increased risk of developing gliomas, including glioblastoma multiforme. However, it is important to note that most people exposed to radiation will not develop gliomas.

Symptoms of Glioblastoma multiforme

The symptoms of glioblastoma multiforme can vary depending on the location of the tumor in the brain. Some of the common symptoms include:

  • Persistent or recurring headaches.
  • Changes in vision (blurred or double vision).
  • Memory problems or difficulty concentrating.
  • Changes in mood or personality.
  • Weakness on one side of the body or difficulty moving.
  • Seizures.
  • Speech problems or difficulty finding the right words.

Diagnosis of Glioblastoma Multiforme

Diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme is usually made through a combination of tests and procedures. Some of the diagnostic methods used are:

Imaging tests

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) are imaging techniques that use magnets, radio waves, and/or x-rays to create detailed images of the brain. These tests help identify the presence of brain tumors and provide information about their size, location, and characteristics.

Biopsy

In some cases, a biopsy may be done to obtain a sample of tissue from the brain tumor. This sample is examined under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme and determine its degree of malignancy.

Cerebrospinal fluid analysis

A sample of the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord can be removed through a lumbar puncture. This sample is tested for the presence of cancer cells or tumor markers.

Tumor markers

Some specific laboratory tests can detect the presence of tumor markers in the blood or other body fluids. These markers can confirm the existence of glioblastoma multiforme.

Treatment of Glioblastoma Multiforme (GM)

Treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GM) usually involves a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. However, it is important to note that treatment may vary depending on the individual case and the patient’s preferences.

Surgery

Surgery is the first step in treating glioblastoma multiforme. The goal of surgery is to remove as much of the tumor as possible without damaging vital brain areas.

Radiotherapy

After surgery, radiation therapy may be given to destroy any remaining tumor cells and prevent their growth. Radiation therapy is given in daily sessions over several weeks.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is used to treat glioblastoma multiforme and may be given along with or after radiation therapy. Chemotherapy drugs usually target and kill cancer cells.

Targeted therapy

In certain cases, targeted therapies that target the specific genetic characteristics of the tumor may be used. These therapies may include medications that inhibit the growth of blood vessels that feed the tumor or medications that block cell growth signals.

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is an emerging approach in the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme. It involves stimulating the body's immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells. Research and clinical trials are currently underway to evaluate the efficacy of immunotherapy in the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme.

Risk Factors

Age

Glioblastoma multiforme is more common in middle-aged adults and older people. The incidence of GBM increases as you age.

Radiation exposure

Previous exposure to radiation, either from radiation therapy treatments to the brain or from exposure to ionizing radiation in other circumstances, has been associated with the development of glioblastoma multiforme.

Genetics

Some inherited genetic disorders such as neurofibromatosis type 1 and type 2, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, and Turcot syndrome, have been linked to an increased risk of developing GBM.
