Prescribing Laughter: A Meeting That Reminded the Importance of Emotional Well-Being in Prevention and Health

As a surgical oncologist, I have always believed that medicine is much more than diagnoses, treatments, and surgeries. Health is also built from the emotional, from the spaces that allow us to connect, breathe and remember that we are all human beings before patients or professionals.
Therefore, participating through Panama Cancer Clinic as a sponsor of the “Recetando Risas” event, organized by Pacific Center Hospital, was a deeply meaningful experience.

This meeting not only brought together specialists and families, but also created an environment where humor, sensitivity and emotional support became tools for well-being. In oncology, we know that stress, anguish and emotional burden directly influence the quality of life and the general health of each person. Spaces like this are powerful reminders of what really matters: accompanying, listening and humanizing.

Medicine is also strengthened with humanity

When a patient laughs, accompanies himself or feels understood, his body responds differently. There are studies that show how positive emotions reduce cortisol, improve the immune response and help the body to better cope with disease processes.
Therefore, supporting activities focused on emotional well-being is an essential part of comprehensive care. It is not enough to focus on the physical; we must address all dimensions of health.

In Recetando Risas We saw families together, patients sharing their stories, professionals sensitized and an atmosphere that reminded us why we do what we do. Each smile and each moment of connection was a reminder that prevention, accompaniment and emotional support also save lives.

Our commitment from Panama Cancer Clinic

Being part of this initiative reaffirms our commitment to a more conscious, closer oncology focused on the integral well-being of the patient. We will continue to support projects that combine education, community and humanity, because prevention is not only in avoiding the disease, but also in promoting environments that strengthen mental and emotional health.
