Breast Cancer: Prevention and Awareness for Women and Men

In the month of the fight against breast cancer, it is essential to reflect on the importance of prevention and early detection. In a recent interview with Dr. Roberto Garcia, a specialized oncologist, we talked about the crucial steps to prevent breast cancer and how each person, both women and men, can take care of their breast health.

1. Breast Self-Exam: The First Step in Prevention

From the age of 18, women should start performing breast self-exams once a month. Dr. Garcia suggests doing it before the menstrual period, to avoid alterations in the breast tissue. Self-examination allows the person to become familiar with the shape and texture of their breasts, helping to detect any unusual changes that may require medical attention.

2. Mammography: The Most Reliable Screening Method

Screening mammography is the recommended method of choice for detecting breast cancer in its early stages. According to Dr. Garcia, this study should begin at age 40 for most women. However, those with a family history of breast cancer or who have elevated risk factors can begin mammography at age 35.

3. Breast Cancer in Men: An Increased Risk

Although breast cancer in men is less common, Dr. Garcia notes that cases have been on the rise. It is critical for men to also be aware of the symptoms and seek medical attention if they notice any changes in the breast tissue. Tumors in men tend to be more aggressive and, when detected, are often already at an advanced stage. Early detection is key to improving prognosis.

4. Healthy Lifestyle: Reduce Risk

Dr. Garcia emphasizes that in addition to regular screenings, adopting a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. Maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding excessive alcohol and tobacco consumption are key habits to strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of malignant diseases.

5. Access to Health Services: There Are No Excuses

Dr. García highlights that in Panama there are programs such as Fundac Cancer and the National Oncology Institute, which offer free diagnostic and treatment services for people with limited resources. These programs allow more people to have access to early detection exams, which are essential for timely intervention.

6. Regular Medical Consultations: Professional Support is Essential

Finally, Dr. Garcia advises that women, especially those with a family history or risk factors, do not neglect their regular medical visits. Visits to an oncologist allow breast health to be monitored preventively, detecting any abnormality in the early stages.
