Breast Cancer: Healing the Body and Taking Care of the Mind After Diagnosis

Breast cancer remains the neoplasm with the highest incidence and the main cause of cancer diagnoses in the female population in Panama and worldwide. Behind these figures there are stories of resilience, struggle and life restructuring that cover not only the physical aspect, but also emotional and social well-being.

In an interview for the television program Jelou, Dr. Roberto García Castillo (@doc_anticancer), surgical oncologist and mastologist at Panama Cancer Clinic, joined Mitzi Vásquez, a specialist in public health, occupational medicine and survivor of this disease, to talk openly about mental health, psychological sequelae and the patient’s environment after cancer.

The Evolution of Mastology: From Traditional Mammography to Advanced Early Detection

During the interview, it was highlighted how diagnostic medicine has evolved in the area of mastology. Traditionally, early detection strategies were based almost exclusively on conventional mammography. Currently, the range of resources has been expanded to offer more accurate diagnoses in incipient stages.

Advanced technologies and aesthetic preservation

Dr. Roberto García explained that medical practice has advanced studies:

  • Breast Tomosynthesis: Three-dimensional study that evaluates tissue more accurately.
  • Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Highly sensitive tool to detect lesions and plan personalized approaches.

Detecting the disease in the early stages not only improves the prognosis of survival, but also allows surgeons to implement conservative techniques. This helps to avoid aggressive treatments or disfiguring surgeries, protecting both the patient’s quality of life and self-esteem.

The Invisible Scars: Post-Treatment Mental Health Management

One of the central moments of the program was the testimony of Mitzi Vásquez, who addressed the emotional impact that arises after finishing clinical treatments.

“When you think you’re going up the mountain, you may relapse. When you think you’re reaching the top, you might slip a stone and turn down. In the end we managed to reach the top, but there are scars… You can see the physical scars, but the most relevant are the psychological scars.” — Mitzi Vasquez, Public Health Specialist and Survivor.

Psychological and psychiatric support in oncology

Mitzi shared that she had to undergo her chemotherapy treatment during the pandemic, taking daily 45-minute walks in the parking lot to stay active. Despite overcoming the initial stage with strength, after the process she required psychiatric care to process the emotional impact and the fear of a possible relapse or metastasis.

Mental health support (clinical psychology and psychiatry) is an essential component of comprehensive cancer treatment. This support allows the process to be assimilated, anxiety to be managed and emotional stability to be restored.

The Care Network: The Role of the Caregiver and Support Circles

A cancer diagnosis transforms a patient’s family and social dynamics. Having a strong support network is key during and after treatment.

Stories of Family and Community Support

Mitzi recounted how her son, who had recently graduated from law school, temporarily postponed his academic plans for a master’s degree abroad and quit his job to accompany her unconditionally in her medical process. Later, once her health was stabilized, she was able to travel to the United States to pursue her higher education.

External support networks also play an essential role:

  • Community and faith circles: Groups that provide spiritual accompaniment and prayer in the home.
  • Support groups such as “Breath of Life”: Meeting spaces where patients and survivors share testimonies, art workshops and recreational physical activity days (such as dance events) designed to strengthen general well-being.

A Strengthened Mind for a New Life

The testimony presented in the program underlines that overcoming cancer implies continuous work on psychological strength and attitude towards life. The combination of a timely diagnosis, updated medical treatments, a healthy lifestyle and an integrated support network are the fundamental pillars to go through the oncological process with well-being and safety.
