3 Key Recommendations for Newly Diagnosed Cancer Patients

When a person receives a cancer diagnosis, the world stops. I have seen it hundreds of times in my office: fear, doubts and the feeling of not knowing where to start appear. That’s why, throughout my experience as a surgical oncologist, I’ve learned that the first decisions and the first steps can make a big difference in treatment and patient peace of mind.

In this article I want to share with you three essential recommendations for those who are facing a recent diagnosis. They are practical, clear and evidence-based suggestions, designed to accompany you in this important moment.

1. Surround yourself with reliable information and real medical sources

The first thing a person usually does when receiving a diagnosis is to search the internet. The problem is that most of the information available is out of context, incomplete, or simply incorrect. This increases fear and delays decision-making.

My recommendation is clear:
Reach out to health professionals, scientific sources, and certified specialists.
Your case is unique, your body is unique, and your treatment should be too.

Talking to your doctor, asking for explanations, and understanding your options is key to getting off to a clear start.

2. Take care of your emotional health from day one

Cancer doesn’t just affect the body; it also has a profound impact on emotions. I’ve seen how fear, anxiety, and stress can interfere with even medical treatment.

That’s why I always recommend my patients:
Don’t go through this process in silence or solitude.

Lean on your family, seek psychological support and allow your environment to be part of your process. Taking care of your emotional well-being strengthens your immune system, improves adherence to treatment and helps you make decisions calmly.

3. Act early: speed matters

Time is a key factor in oncology. It is not a question of running, but of advancing in an orderly and timely manner.

This includes:

  • Realizarte los exámenes necesarios lo antes posible.

  • Consultar con un especialista en oncología.

  • Iniciar el tratamiento adecuado sin demoras.

Early diagnosis and timely treatment can completely change the prognosis. Prevention and early action remain two of the most powerful tools we have against cancer.

My Mission as a Doctor

My commitment has always been to accompany my patients from the first moment. Not just as a surgeon, but as a guide in a process that can feel overwhelming. Prevention, early diagnosis and comprehensive care are part of the philosophy with which I work every day.
